About Carnarvon
Carnarvon sits at the mouth of the Gascoyne River on Western Australia’s Coral Coast. For photographers it combines a working coastal town, broad river flats, historic transport infrastructure, plantations, mangroves, marine life and exceptionally clear night skies.
The strongest visit tells several stories: the heritage precinct and old jetty, the modern waterfront, seasonal horticulture, nearby blowholes and the transition from river country to the Indian Ocean.
Viewpoints
Fascine waterfront
Use boats, palms and the curved shoreline for sunrise, evening colour and blue-hour reflections.
Heritage precinct and One Mile Jetty
Photograph the surviving railway and jetty structures from legal public areas; access conditions have changed over time, so obey barriers.
Gascoyne River
Look for floodplain patterns, red earth, birdlife and changing water levels rather than expecting permanent surface flow.
OTC Dish
The large communications dish is a strong graphic and night-sky subject.
Quobba and the Blowholes
About 75 kilometres north, powerful swell and rugged coast provide dramatic seascapes; remain behind warnings and well back from the edge.
