Photographing water tower and tank art

For each artwork, begin with a straight-on frame that records the complete painting, then make a second image showing the tower or tank within its town or landscape. Soft light helps retain colour and detail; check for roadside obstructions and keep verticals straight. Use the directory below to plan a route and check access at each location before travelling.

Australian Water Tower, Tank & Infrastructure Art Directory

Across Australia, hundreds of otherwise functional water towers, reservoirs and tanks have been transformed into enormous public artworks.

These installations are particularly interesting photographically because their cylindrical shapes, height and isolated locations often allow the artwork to be photographed from several completely different directions.

This Auspano directory concentrates on:

  1. Painted water towers.
  2. Painted water tanks and reservoirs.
  3. Other comparable freestanding infrastructure artworks.

Conventional wall murals and general street art are deliberately excluded. Grain-silo artwork is also excluded because it is covered by the separate Auspano Australian Silo Art Directory .

Access: Many water tanks remain operational infrastructure. Some can only be viewed from outside fences, from designated viewing areas or from nearby roads. Never enter fenced water-authority or private property unless public access is specifically permitted.

Photographing Australia requires travelling Australia. This sub-site is dedicated to how and where we travel, and what lessons we learn.

Traveling Australia requires a vehicle that go anywhere, self recover, and accomodate two adults. We chose a Unimog, and this site details how we modified it to suit our purposes.
